I Don’t Always Look Ridiculously Happy, Bright-Eyed and Chipper

I have my intense face on this morning.

Romantic Comedy Writers Have a Serious Side Too

Yesterday I added the much-needed conflict that was missing from the original version of my previously published romantic comedy novel, Polly’s Perilous Pleasures.

It was perfect. Deliciously grim. As of last night when I left my manuscript, the heroine’s heart had just been broken. So had the hero’s.

The scene was raw with anger, betrayal, sadness and misunderstanding. And now, this morning, it’s my job as a writer to fix it all--to somehow, beyond all logic or reason, craft a stunningly satisfying happily-ever-after ending from the bitter, painful shards that remain of a shattered relationship.

And you thought my job was easy. Ha!

Reminder: Follow along as I take readers, as well as other writers, on my thorny journey of a book rewrite on my Daisy Dexter Dobbs author blog! The series is called Anatomy of a Rewrite. Part one: Just Like Einstein and Frankenstein. Part two: Kill Your Darlings.

  1. I know you can do it! Writers can be intense, but they are superheroes with words.

  3. I love writing these types of scenes, and when I first write them they're of course, perfect. Problem is something happens to my writing during my absence and when I come back to reread the scene, it's gone completely bad, awful even. I wonder if there is a 'best if read by:' date on my ms...hummm. Wonder if it's the same thing with comments....double hummmm.

    1. It's true, Elise. I'll write something, polish it, and feel truly satisfied with the "perfection" I've created. The next time I come back to the scene and read it again, I think it’s garbage. This is just one of the many joys of writing--and why we writers often tend to be a wee bit screwy. ;-)

  4. I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to write a romantic comedy so I wouldn't think of offering advice. But it seems to me these plots usually involve an innocent misunderstanding, so you might be sure to have one. Ooops! That sounds like advice.

  5. I have never even tried to write a romantic comedy. I haven't tried romance at all. Of course, I have been divorced twice, so maybe I don't know how to do it.

    1. Aw, I’m sorry, Brett. Being twice divorced is kind of like living your own tragi-comedy, I would think. :( Maybe you should start writing, romance novels. Just think of all the women you’d attract by telling them what you do! You might not find your personal happily-ever-after right away...but you’d have plenty of fun along the way. :D

  6. Blogging is about the only thing I can write since the stories are simple and something I know a lot about, myself.

I have always wanted to write, I just never made it a priority... for if I did, I would have.

I have a great respect for writers, I know it isn't all easy and fun, there are lots of times, the ideas don't seem to come, I am sure you will come up with an awesome ending:)

    1. Thanks, Launna. For some people writing is a passion and they can't NOT write. That would be me. :) It can be difficult but I think it's far more rewarding than troublesome. :)

Blogging is a fabulous way for people to test the waters with their writing, plus it's a medium that doesn't demand too much time or commitment on the part of the writer.

  7. You aren't always a happy chappy? Are you sure? That seems so wrong. You make so many of us smile you deserve some of your own. Sending a few spare smiles your way. One size fits all, only slightly used. Careful little old lady previous owner. Scarcely used.

  8. A while back I was writing a really sad scene, my husband asked me why I was so down. I told him that it was because of the scene I had just written. He was really puzzled.

    1. Oh I know exactly what you mean, Vivian. I get very involved in my scenes. If they make me laugh or cry, then I know I've done a good job.

Also, I have characters running around inside my head pestering me at all times of the day and the middle of the night. Trying to explain this to non-writers is really difficult! LOL
