As you can see by this glamour shot, I’m in my writing mode, complete with fashionable reading glasses and beautifully coiffed hair.

I’m in the process of rewriting nearly 20 books after getting the rights back from my publishers. It’s quite a task because some of the books were written over a decade ago.
Since so many of you who are writers, or interested in becoming a writer, have contacted me about writing advice, I thought sharing the writing/rewriting process with you would be an excellent idea. So as of this morning, I’ve started a brand new series on my Daisy Dexter Dobbs author blog.
The series is called The Anatomy of a Book Rewrite and the first post is titled “Just Like Einstein and Frankenstein.”
I’ll be covering approximately one-and-a-half bazillion topics over the weeks, including:
Killing your darlings
How to show rather than tell
How to build believable conflict
Which words to savagely cut from your manuscript
How to handle foreign accents and words
How to write a satisfying romance with lots of sex, rather than a sex book with some romance thrown in
How to write romantic comedy without having it come across as silly or stupid
How to create heroines that aren’t annoying or, worse yet, TSTL (too stupid to live)
How to write believable dialogue
How to spot and correct dangling or misplaced metaphors
When to use correct grammar and when to forget it
How to create compelling character names
How to create satisfying, passionate love scenes without writing something smutty
What to do when trying like hell to come up with different words to describe body parts or the sex act
Sound interesting? I hope you’ll join me there. (There will be illustrations too!)
NOTE: If you know of any writers who might benefit from what I’ll be discussing in this series, please do share my blog posts with them. Those of you who’ve known me for any length of time (especially those of you who have contacted me for writing advice over the years) know that I’m a great believer in writers generously helping their fellow writers--and that I practice what I preach. There’s plenty of room at the top and I’d love nothing better than to see us all get there, stay there, and celebrate together! :D
P.S. -- I’ll still be popping in here on my Super Earthling blog every so often with a new post too.

Whoo hoo! I'm excited about this!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susannah! I hope you enjoy the series--and thanks for retweeting, and also for following @DaisyDDobbs on Twitter! :D
DeleteOh, neat! I'll be following that blog as well!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently in the throes of National Novel Writing Month, so no rewrites/editing going on in THIS house. However, this book (which is a sequel) and the book that came before will certainly need an overhaul once December comes.
Thanks, Jennifer! :) So many of my writing friends are working hard on their writing projects this month. Anything that can get us (and keep us) writing is a good thing! Wishing you the best of luck!
DeleteI'm not a writer, but I love to read about the process of writing. Looking forward to checking out your new place-
ReplyDeleteThank you, Shelly! I hope you find the series interesting as well as enjoyable. :)
DeleteI'll be sure to check out your new blog. Sounds interesting and fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Stephen. You already know how much I enjoy your writing. :) Hope you like the series!
DeleteOh my this is such perfect timing I have a novelette that I need to re-write and I have been putting it off because I really don't know how to fix what I am doing wrong.
ReplyDeleteOh good, I'm glad, Vivian! I hope you'll find the series to be of some help--I think you will. :)
DeleteWell I hope you aren't going to be to busy to post here, love reading your blogs :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I really appreciate that. I'll post here as often as I can. I truly enjoy creating my Super Earthling posts. My writing must come first though because it's my livelihood. :)
DeleteSexy glasses! Girls in glasses are super-hot. *cleans her glasses on her shirt*
ReplyDeleteYay for glasses! I had to get reading glasses just about the time I turned 40 and am helpless without them now when reading or working at the computer. :)
DeleteI have never read your series, I am going to look into it though.. your blog is very entertaining :)
ReplyDeleteThe series just started today on my author blog, Launna, so you haven't missed anything. So glad you enjoy my blog. Thanks! :)
DeleteI guess I will have to add your other blog to my reader so I learn me summpin. :)
ReplyDeleteYay! I'd be delighted if you did, Chuck! Um...add my other blog, I mean...not learn something. LOL
DeleteHow did you get that picture of me???
ReplyDeleteI love the spirit in which you operate. Does all writers proud!
The great part about working from home, Marianne, is that I can look like a sloppy, threadbare disaster until just before my husband gets home. LOL Thank you! :D
DeleteWill be overjoyed for some writing advice! I will definitely drop in. Can you also teach us how to create your fun artwork as well?
ReplyDelete:D
Great, Diane--I'd love to see you there. I've have plenty of writing tips to share! As for my artwork, all you have to do is pick up a pen, close your eyes and draw. Voila! LOL
DeleteThanks! :D
