Super Earthling’s Writing Related Brain Spills

posted by Susan, Super Earthling And now for something completely different! :D The drawings for my next post are pretty detailed and taking me a while to complete (a guaranteed giggle-filled post!) so I thought I’d use the opportunity to share some of my other artwork so you can see Super Earthling is not just a …

Super Earthling original artwork

My creative style is quirky, eccentric and off the wall, whether writing or creating art. I enjoy working with a variety of art media from Sharpie pens to acrylic paints, to watercolors, to pen and ink, to pencil, to collage, to digital, and so on. The only thing I don’t use is oil paint, because I just don’t have the patience for it. Depending on my mood, I might create a work in the style of realism, cubist, abstract expressionist, and most everything in between.

When I’m creating abstract expressionist art I think of my creative process as the deliberate spilling of whatever’s been clogging up my brain of late. A cleansing brain spill, if you will.

Super Earthling original artwork

Today I’m sharing several of my recent writing-related brain spills with you. These are greatly reduced in size.

I enjoy creating these when I’m between blog posts, manuscripts, when I’m plagued with a bit of writer’s block, etc. I just put pen/pencil/marker/brush to canvas or paper and let my thoughts and emotions flow. Since I don’t need to concern myself with being precise and accurate (as when I’m creating a realism painting), creating abstract art helps to free up my mind and allow my creativity and imagination to surge. Each time I complete a piece, I’m relaxed, full of new ideas and eager to get back to writing.

(Note: each of the images below has been digitally enhanced to varying degrees, meaning that after scanning or photographing my original art, I made changes or corrections to the original piece using Corel Paint Shop Pro. Changes include: altering brightness, contrast and sharpness; color correction; altering with the use of swirling; adding drawn lines; correcting blurred areas from scan; fixing assorted mistakes, etc.)

Enjoy!

(Of course, if you’re not a fan of abstract expressionism, then you probably won’t enjoy--but perhaps you’ll still have fun looking at the art, scratching your head and wondering “WTF?” LOL)

  1. Ack! So. Many. Curved. Lines. Very cool. I like Writer's Block...Week Three and Oops...Purple Prose the most.

I like to "draw" (I put draw in quotes because really I have no talent at it whatsoever, but I like to pretend I do) but I usually end up with triangles, squares and snails. I love symmetry and geometric shapes when I doodle! You should see my notebooks from college and meetings when I was working. "Yes, Sir, I'm taking notes about the upcoming testing procedures. It's all right here next to this complicated triangle stack!"

    1. Thank you, Heather! :) I think the wonderful think about art is that no talent is necessary. For me, creating art is relaxing, joyful, and therapeutic, whether it's something serious and realistic or just sketchy doodling. It's all good because it makes us feel good inside while we create.

I have tons of geometric doodles too! I love making those. I find it interesting that the art we create is so closely tied to our moods and emotions.

  2. Three weeks ago a client that I was ghost writing for tried to underpay me. We then had an online battle. I refunded him and he had to revoke the rights to my story but he refused. After this incident I could not write it upset me so much and no stories would come out. Till Sunday. Saturday night I dreamed a really good story and I am busy writing it now. Your "Fascinating Dream becomes book plot" made me think of this.

    1. Oh, Vivian, that sounds just awful! I also worked as a ghostwriter for decades, mostly for political and corporate concerns. I had a few unhappy incidents as well. I can certainly understand why it would make you too upset to write.

But the good news, Vivian, is that every crisis we come through makes us a better writer (or artist or creative person) because it adds to our life experience, which can be expressed in future works.

Several of my books started with a dream and went on to become reader favorites. I wish you great happiness as you write your story, and much success with the finished product! :D

    1. Thanks! I think it's very freeing, Elle. When something is troubling me, or when I don't feel well (I have an autoimmune condition that causes pain and systemic inflammation) I just grab the nearest art supplies and let my emotions spill out. It never fails to improve my mood and even make me feel better physically!

I'd love to see your brain spills! :D

  6. WOW, absolutely amazing!!!! I have the perfect place to hang your "new book contract celebration" in my crayola crayon box of a house. The colors of your artwork match my house perfectly!!!!

    1. Thank you very much! I love the sound of your decor. It sounds like such a happy house! So many people are afraid of using color in their homes and that's a shame. Beige on cream on off-white doesn't inspire or motivate very much. Surrounding yourself with color can totally change the way you feel.

I'd love to see you post some pictures of your decorating! :D

I love your brain spills and have to confess that mine would look like the unpleasant something that all of us have brought into the house on the bottom of our shoes.

    1. Hey, how did you find out about my alien chameleon identity? ;-)

I don't believe yours would be unpleasant at all. Pouring out emotion on paper/canvas/etc., is a great way to relax and relieve stress--it doesn't have to look like da Vinci. LOL Because we're all different, they're all bound to look different. That marvelous difference each of us brings is one of the things I enjoy most about art!

Thank you very much for your very kind words.

  25. WOW! Those look awesome.

I often draw things that look exactly like your shapes above! Especially the first one. During meetings or just when I'm bored, I'll grab a pen/pencil/whatever-I've-got and draw shapes much like the above and shade them in either different colours/textures/gradients.

    1. Thank you so much, Cat, for the wonderful compliment! I truly appreciate it. :D

I've done several other drawings that are similar to the first one. I like just letting the pencil (or marker, or whatever I'm using) flow and let it create something that I later "flesh out" with more detail. I try not to censor myself and just let myself relax.

No, you're not silly or random, you're a creative soul! I'd love to see your brain spills--I'll bet your creations are fabulous! :)

  26. These are fantastic. I had to stop for a while on each one because i'd catch something with my brain and it would take a bit for my eyes to see what my brain was looking at. That probably doesn't make any sense, sorry.

I've tried to do something like that before but i have trouble letting go and not letting things just happen. I realize that you need to have things flow in a certain direction so your eyes never stop moving but i always seem to end up with a wavey drawing of an actual object.

You are quite the talented artist. :)

    1. Actually, Ken,it makes perfect sense. Thank you very much! :D

I think each time we set out to create something artistic, the finished products depends greatly upon what's been happening in our lives. If we've been stressed, it will show in the artwork. If we're exuberantly happy, that will show. If we're feeling conflicted, then the results will show that too.

So there isn't really any one way or right way to create. Whatever you create becomes is a little slice of life that you've captured and, most likely, years later you'll remember what was happening in your life at the time you created it. :)

    1. Many thanks, Mike! :) For me, one of the must enjoyable things about art is hearing the varied reactions of the viewer. We each see and feel something entirely different when looking at the same piece. Such fun!

I'm originally from Chicago and greatly miss the blissful mornings I'd spend at the Art Institute there. The place (like MOMA) was absolutely huge and it was impossible to take it all in in just a day--or even several days. We have a lovely art museum here in Portland, and I love going there, but it's relatively tiny.

      Delete
    2. Maybe you can get down to San Francisco and go to the MOMA there. I lived in the Bay for sixteen years and loved the SFMOMA. I've never been to Chicago (outside of the Grey House Station) I would love to check out the art museum and the blues clubs!

      Delete
    3. ha ha, I said grey house station...WTF?
      I meant Grey Hound Station!

      Delete
    4. Oh yes, I'd like to get to San Francisco (haven't been there yet) and spend lots of time at their art museum!

LOL--no problem about the station, Mike. I knew what you meant. ;-) Chicago has great blues and sensational food. The only thing I don't miss about it is the weather--bone-chilling cold in winter with tons of ice and snow, and humid all summer. So if you travel there, I'd suggest autumn. :)

That piece has special meaning to me because I tend to be a wordy writer who has trained myself to edit the hell out of my "golden words" no matter how difficult that may be. I do LOVE your artwork!

    1. I completely understand what you mean, Cat. There are many times when I've been tempted just to paint a wide gray slash over black, depicting the lack of interesting ideas inside my head. But looking at it would probably depress me, so I don't follow through on the thought. LOL

      Thanks very much! :)

    1. How very nice--many thanks, Betty! :)

I used to show it in galleries, and I also did juried art fairs for years but grew tired of that. Now I just create for the sheer joy of it and hang the work on the walls of my home or give away as gifts. I might put some of my favorites on mugs or T-shirts someday. :)

  72. You signed up as "follower" on my blog, so I came for a visit here. I mean, what kinds of creatures want to follow an old Bear's blog?

Oh, my goodness! What interesting art! Kinda like the stuff I want to do, but have been too busy to put brush/marker/pen/pencil to paper/canvas. (There are time thieves taking hours out of my days and days out of my weeks — no wonder I can't get anything done!)

Your brainspill reminds me of a very open-minded man I met once. He was so open-minded that his brain fell out of his head.
