Super Earthling’s A to Z Straitjacket Avoidance Picture Alphabet

posted by Susan, Super Earthling Warning: this post contains some cartoon nudity, as well as stuff that could possibly be construed as politically incorrect. Therefore, it is so totally not meant to be used as a preschool teaching aid. So if you’re a preschooler, put down that vodka, get that cigarette out of your pouty little mouth, do not even THINK about commenting here, and hightail your naughty, poopy little butt out of here this instant! I mean it. Don’t make me resort to using my fearsome zombie apocalypse voice!

Okay, now that I’ve taken care of that bit of annoyance…

Since I first began my original author blog years ago, I’ve been in awe of bloggers who manage to post daily. I can’t figure out how they manage to write books, blog daily, post comments on other blogs, tweet, be active on Facebook, participate on forums—AND do real life stuff too! I just can’t do it.

I’ve been feeling a little better lately, because I figured doing an illustrated blog gave me a valid excuse for not posting daily. My immeasurable glee was short-lived because of this:

The A to Z Blogging Challenge from hell has made me feel laughably deficient because of people like Stephanie and her fabulous Clay Baboons blog. She’s doing the daily A-Z challenge, complete with the most clever, imaginative, adorable and amazing clay figures imaginable. Thank you, Stephanie. Thank you for making me feel woefully inadequate.

If I tried to blog daily…or even two or three times a week, the guys in the white coats would come strap me into a straitjacket and haul my blog-unworthy ass off to the loony bin because of the freaky, scary breakdown I’d be having.

Go ahead and take a bow, all of you clever, talented daily bloggers who have caused me to become deeply chagrined and fearful of men in white coats. I hope you’re happy.

I call this my A to Z Straitjacket Avoidance Picture Alphabet because I’m presenting the whole damn alphabet right here, right now, all in one damn day. How can I get away with doing that? “Because I am Super Earthling, dammit!” she said in her fearsome zombie apocalypse voice, while furiously waving her beloved Sharpie markers.

(Please note: Because I’m open-minded and flexible, I give you permission to just look at one letter today, and then come back here each day for 26-days to look the rest of the letters, one by one.)

As you go along, please remember to hum the ABC song to enhance dramatic effect. It makes a big difference. Really.

  1. Your illustrations are BEAUTIFUL. Since you're waving sharpies, should I assume that they're done by hand and not digitally? Or maybe drawn by hand and then coloured digitally? Gorgeous! (And you are NOT inadequate. You managed to have more nudity and political incorrectness in one post that I'll have in the whole alphabet. Quite an accomplishment! Ha!)

    1. Thank you, oh overly productive one! :D Yes, these are little 2 x 3-inch artist trading cards (ATC) that I drew with Sharpies. Then I scanned them in and did some fill-in work digitally.

Thank you, I do excel at cartoon nudity and political incorrectness, don't I? LOL Seriously, thanks, Stephanie, for adding smiles & sunshine to my day with your awesome clay figures! :D

  2. You know a couple of those you could make into Valentine's greeting cards. I'm sure of it. L, U and O most surely! I am amazed at you bloggers who draw and illustrate your posts.

I'm working my way through the A to Z and I am struggling with keeping up. Not so much with the posting, but with the commenting. The hosts suggest commenting on 5-10 blogs a day. The problem is I found so many cool ones my in box is flooded with blog posts and I get totally overwhelmed and say "fuck it!" and go do something else like laundry or mowing the lawn. I'm not sure if I'd do this again next year, but I'm certainly glad I gave it a try.

    1. Thanks, Heather! However, I was sorta thinking M and T might be better suited for Valentines. :D

O, oh, OH!!! I so totally understand what you mean about commenting on other blogs. Talk about being woefully inadequate (I mean me--not you. LOL)! Sheesh--I can barely keep up. Then I get so nervous and I feel SO bad because people have been so kind to take time to come here and comment on my blog and I'm afraid they'll think I don't care and I'm ungrateful and...*deep breath* and it makes me crazy! :-o

That's one of the main reasons I did my thank-you tribute post for the people who've commented here.

  3. I love your A to Z post! I loved "J" the best because being a former Chicagoan, I have known several of those in my life xD.

Honestly, I have no clue how I am coming up with material enough to post each day since I started my blog but I am. I guess my life is just that wacky, and full of daily crazy fodder. ;)

  5. Leo The Low-Lying Lion looks a lot like a boner. Then again, I'm pretty sure that was what you were after. And, yes. This is definitely not meant for chain-smoking, drunk preschoolers. How nice of you to have thought of that! (Love your drawings =))) )

    ReplyDelete

    1. Good God, Marie--you made me spew my coffee! LOL

No, seriously, I never realized that good old Leo the Lion resembled a boner until you brought it up. I swear to God. But perhaps I should pretend to be slick and savvy and say that YES, yes I most certainly DID do that intentionally.

Yikes. Thank God I shooed away the drunken, chain-smoking preschoolers before they saw Leo! :-o

      Thanks! :D

    3. Oh hell...I'll never live this one down. LOL Readers always ask me where I get the ideas for my romantic comedy novels and for the funny stories on my blog. I tell them I'm never at a loss for material--all I have to do is use my own life experiences. LOL This, Stephanie, is a prime example.

Here I am, a woman who's written 20-some erotic romance books (complete with graphic sex scenes)--and yet, honest to God--I really and truly never had any sort of double entendre thoughts when doing Leo. LOL I was just happily doodling & thinking up L words and this is the result.

I'm just a clueless, empty-headed idiot who always seems to find a way to get myself into some sort of trouble. Good God--I think Freud would have a field day delving into my psyche! :-o

Thank you so much for loving my work, Pish! :D These alphabet pictures actually began as a series of artist trading cards. I get emails all the time asking for one image or another from one of my posts on a T-shirt, mug, mouse pad, etc. So I'm giving serious thought to opening a zazzle store at some point in the future. :)

    1. Oh my goodness, thank you, Amanda--for your kind words and also for sharing on Facebook! I truly appreciate it.

I actually used to have a line of greeting cards, back before the internet became part of our daily lives, which means I had to take my cards from one brick and mortar store to the next. I also sent my designs to greeting card companies for their consideration. I got soured on that when one major company ripped off one of my best designs. :(

But since I get asked to often enough, I think I'll probably end up opening a zazzle shop in the future. :)

You missed a few opportunities for being politically incorrect there. I know it was on purpose though. I could never get away with those like you. I'd have more hate mail than a blog devoted to whale hunting. It's because you are so good at it, they laugh.

Other worldly...why, yes, Chuck, I'd say that describes me very well. I blame it on that tiny, flighty brain of mine--it's all over the universe. LOL

So glad you enjoyed the post--thanks! :)

    1. Heather, FYI--the hyperlink in your name here has a typo, so it goes nowhere when it's clicked on. There's an extra "i" in "devolution". Wanted to tell you in case you copy & paste so it doesn't happen elsewhere. :) (I'll also pop over to your blog to let you know in case you don't see this here.)

Now to the good stuff! LOL Thank you VERY much for your kind words about my work. I'm so very glad you enjoyed this post. :D

Your pictures are wonderful and missing a few days meant that i got to catch all the great comments as well. Plus, i like the way that you were thinking outside the box on this A-Z thing. Terrific job! :)

The comments are always my favorite part. When I visit other blogs I spend way too much time reading what everyone had to say in the comments section. It's that wonderful interaction that makes blogging so special. :)

  55. What a pleasure and treasure to meet you Super Earthling! Thank you for your visit today. It meant a lot to me! Aaaaand you will get the 'biggest kick' outta this..... mmmm old middle aged daughter who is devout about her intense privacy needs once again looking over my shoulder at my computer readings with stern warning, "I don't know what you are reading, but you better not let (Grandson's name) see that." (Mind you had this been 'me' looking over 'her' shoulder, she would have gone ballistic on me.)

Oh the old double standard, hmm? It's okay for your daughter to look over your shoulder but not the other way around. LOL If your grandson is little, then he might learn just a little too much too soon from these alphabet cards. ;-)

I found you on Twitter and followed you. Thanks again! :)

  56. Holy crow woman...I'm tired from scrolling way down here! First of all, I was thinking of an entirely different word when you got to "C" considering you started with "ass" and then...ahem..."bee"...I was thinking you were going to draw a cu...well, never mind that.
Second of all, I laughed out loud at the politically incorrect Indian. And thirdly, thank you thank you for your lovely comments. I was having a pity party, but thanks to you, I'm feeling better. I'll be back on the horse tomorrow touting more tales of my cu...well, never mind...

    1. LOL! Oh Sandra, I am so not surprised at your "C" suggestion. However, being the highly refined lady that I am (I lift my pinky when drinking tea), I took the high road. ;-)

As for my comment--you're very welcome. You just need to know how much you're valued, just for being you. Your posts make readers smile, which means you make a difference in their day. That's really what it's all about. :)

    1. Thanks! :D Maybe you missed where it says "politically incorrect" on the "I" card. LOL

I thought of doing zydecos or zoophyte or zithers. Or a favorite food like zucchini. Or maybe zombies, but I’ve already immortalized zombies in a previous post…so I decided to go with the obvious, just because zebras make me smile. :)

Oh my goodness, the thought of this ABC as a children's book is horrifying! :-o

  61. Well you just did the whole A to Z in one post!!!! I am blown away and struck by awe!

Yes, I did the A to Z and it just about killed me. When I got to "R", I was, like, "Only three more letters to go, I can do this!" and then The Husband had to go and say, "No, Sweetie, EIGHT more letter, not three, where did you get three from?" MEN. He always was better at math.

Great post! Will be back to read more soon. :)

    best,
    MOV

    1. Thanks, MOV, but I don't deserve the praise because I totally cheated by doing all the ABCs in just one post. It's all the people like you who've been posting daily that are truly awesome! :D

Your husband (mine is naturally great at math too, while I totally suck at it unless I have a calculator) should have kept quiet and just allowed you to bask in the blissful belief that you only had 3 letters left to go--however misguided your belief was. LOL

    1. Better late than never, Elise! LOL I'm so very happy you enjoyed this post. I had such fun creating it.

I honestly don't believe talent has much to do with art. To me, Elise, artwork is more of an expression of the artist's emotion at the time they're creating it. So whether it's stick figures or Mona Lisa-esque, art is wonderful! Now go forth and draw--and, most importantly, enjoy the hell out of the process! :D
